A city girl at heart, I grew up in Harlem, NY. I was the type of kid who dragged my parents to dance class, soccer practice (short-lived, may I add), and eventually ice skating.

And this is where I felt my story diverge.

Let’s be real: you won’t find many girls who look like me who ice skate. It’s an expensive sport inaccessible to many Black people for a multitude of reasons. Couple my sport with the infamous predominantly white schooling and “talking white” — I didn’t fit the story society had written out for me.

I had grown up thinking my story wasn’t right because it was different. But now I know a story like mine hadn’t been written yet for me to believe that a girl like me could exist amidst the noise society had made telling me who I should be.

As I strive to become a storyteller studying journalism and integrated marketing communications at Northwestern University, I tried figuring out how I want to identify in a new space — corporate America. Through iterations of titles, there was never one that felt right. But that’s because there isn’t one word to encapulate who I am.

That’s why I chose to be untitled.
