A city girl at heart, I grew up in Harlem, NY. I was the type of kid dragging their parents to dance class, soccer practice (short-lived, may I add), and eventually ice skating. I was always on the move, curious about trying the next thing. I was always naturally drawn to writing as a child, keeping an array of fuzzy and sparkly notebooks to write down my various plans to take over the world or short fiction. Although that curiosity is still alive, and I am always eager for new experiences and constantly plotting to take over the world, I have found a love for storytelling. As a young Black girl in Harlem ice skating, I was constantly reminded that I never fit into the script society had written for girls who look like me. Although it phased me while I was younger, I embrace my inability to fit into society’s status quo for Black girls now. In fact, I choose to take my love for storytelling and challenge the status quo through my work.
