BlackBoard Magazine

The story: When I started Northwestern University in September 2022, our Black student publication, BlackBoard Magazine, was inactive which caused me to join another student-run publication. Towards the end of my freshman year, I initialized the rebirth of BlackBoard with the help of a group of students. The rebirth included a comprehensive pitch to the Dean of Medill, Northwestern’s School of Journalism, which kickstarted a fundraising effort where we raised over seven thousand dollars for operating costs.

The task: In my role as Print Editor-In-Chief, I experienced a huge learning curve as I never ran a magazine before. I learned to edit multiple stories at once, create editorial visions for magazines, and manage multiple executive teams to ensure the publication remained operational.

The impact: Both issue releases were a huge success. Black As F*ck received over a thousand reads in less than 24 hours. The Visionary Issue, the first printed issue in two years, sold out in 2 hours during distribution.
